CURRENT WORK: Translator and simultaneous interpreter.
I went back to freelance translating as Brazilian Translated in 1987. I've earned active member status in the ATA (American Translators Association) with certifications from Spanish and
Portuguese into English and English into Portuguese. (See credentials, phone and schedule online)
PREVIOUS TRANSLATION WORK: Instructor/translator/interpreter in Brazil, U.S.
Since 1987 I've been producing translations—some of them over a hundred
thousand words—for a number of governments, universities, companies, individuals
and agencies. I have my own booth, receivers and over 1000 hours' experience
as a simultaneous interpreter at graduate courses, seminars, district and immigration court, packing
plants, hospitals, prisons, energy, food and beverage and military conferences—including
cabinet officials and one president. Nowadays I translate for Brazil's
diplomatic service and do a lot of oil and mining material. It's easy to
verify that my pronunciation often lets me pass for a native of Brazil,
where I grew up and travel every year. I have a valid U.S. passport and
a valid Brazilian resident visa.
From 1972 to 1973 I taught English at Brasas and elsewhere in Rio de Janeiro.
Born in Puerto Rico, I've spent 18 years in South America and am a legal
resident of Brazil/US.
EDUCATION: B.A. in Portuguese from the University of Texas at Austin, 1996.
Before that, at the same school, I majored briefly in Engineering and
Mathematics. I have a 4.0 GPA in Spanish and Portuguese.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Proofreader and newsletter editor, writer, contractor.
In 1982 I helped Dr. Petr Beckmann publish his Access to Energy newsletter. I briefly served as Editor for American Defense in 1987, and edited and published PL DATA for the Portuguese Language Division of the ATA from 1992 through 1995 while operating my roofing company. My best areas
are energy & environment, banking & finance, mining and the food industry. I occasionally publish articles on translation and interpreting.
EQUIPMENT: I build my own computers and install the operating systems and software
myself, with a very spry notebook. I have most office software, scanners,
OCR, speech recognition software in both languages, laser and color inkjet printers. I own CAT tools like Déjà Vu and LogiTerm,
record sound, translate videos and maintain websites in both countries.
